Once a year, and for a brief period of time – just 25 days –, the Florence Iris Garden (Giardino dell’Iris) is opened for the public.
With thousands of varieties of ireses during the flowering period, the garden under Piazzale Michelangelo is a must see for those who are in Florence this month.
Until May 20th, the visitors will be able to walk around the two and a half hectares of the park, where over 10 thousand hybrid varieties of iris can be seen, coming from all around the globe, from Japan to America. All kinds of shapes and colors mixed in a nature masterpiece.
Just a curiosity. Many people think that the flower on the banner and on the emblem of the city of Florence is a lily, but they are wrong. In fact, the flower is a red iris in a white field.
And if you will not be in Florence during this period, don’t worry. The garden can be visited all year by appointment, with the possibility of booking guided tours.
