The History of Spaghetti
After all, where does spaghetti come from? We know that it was Marco Polo who brought this gastronomic wonder to Italian lands in the 13th century, but its origin is controversial. There are those who say that its creators were the Chinese. Other currents believe that the first spaghetti-like pasta emerged in the sixth century BC, in a territory in Western Asia, which today corresponds to Pakistan. More precisely in the Indus Valley.
Wherever it came from, one thing is sure: from the moment it arrived in Italy, spaghetti became a national passion, a passion mentioned in Boccaccio’s literature, in his Decameron, who testifies for the first time to the existence of spaghetti, when he says that he was impressed with the taste of “wrapped pasta”.
In the Middle Ages, spaghetti was cooked for a long time and seasoned with completely different ingredients than today. In 1819 the word spaghetti appeared for the first time in the Italian dictionary, at a historical moment when the dish was present mainly in Naples.
First, the tomato became the main condiment for spaghetti, which thanks to migrations to the United States has become the iconic Italian dish in the eyes of Americans and the whole world.
Currently, spaghetti can be consumed with countless sauces and combinations, and you can try 10 of them on our Spaghetti Night. Book your table now: info@tornabuoni1.com.
