Even better if it\u2019s a Vin Brul\u00e8! Mulled wine with spices is an elixir for the palate and warms the body and soul on cold days, not just in Florence, but throughout Italy and northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that it was Hippocrates, a Greek doctor from the 5th century BC, who invented the Vin Brul\u00e8. It would have been him who introduced cinnamon into the recipe precisely because of its numerous beneficial properties.<\/p>\n<p>The origins of Vin Brul\u00e8 also date back to Ancient Rome. \u201cDe Re Coquinaria\u201d, the only gastronomic document from the Empire era, describes mulled wine sweetened with honey and flavored with pepper, lard leaves, saffron and dates.<\/p>\n<p>France had nothing to do with this story, but the name given to mulled wine is French. Why? Probably because the wine most used in its preparation is Cabernet, of French origin. Brul\u00e8 comes from the expression \u201c\u00e7a br\u00fble\u201d and literally means \u201cto burn\u201d. In fact, the wine is heated together with the sugar and spices and then ignited on the surface to evaporate the alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t get excited thinking that you can drink it like grape juice, because Vin Brul\u00e8 remains alcoholic after preparation. Of course, the amount of alcohol is lower than in wine at room temperature, but it\u2019s still there.<\/p>\n<p>Do you want to prepare Vin Brul\u00e8 at home? Here is a very traditional recipe:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ingredients<\/span><\/p>\n<p>500 ml of red wine<\/p>\n<p>100 g of sugar<\/p>\n<p>The zest of an orange<\/p>\n<p>The zest of a lemon<\/p>\n<p>Cloves to taste<\/p>\n<p>1 cinnamon stick<\/p>\n<p>star anise to taste<\/p>\n<p>1 pinch of grated nutmeg<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Preparation<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Wash and dry the orange and lemon, being careful not to remove the white part (which would make the wine too bitter).<\/li>\n<li>Pour the wine, sugar, orange and lemon peel and spices into a pan.<\/li>\n<li>Bring to the boil and cook for about 5 minutes, until the sugar has completely dissolved.<\/li>\n<li>Wait a few minutes, then filter the mulled wine, pour it into the cups and voil\u00e0!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Few drinks go more with the winter than a good wine.
