Today is an important day for Florence: on May 13, 1836, the antiquarian and collector Stefano Bardini was born.
Originally from Arezzo, he moved to Florence in his youth and soon became part of the intellectual café circles and the halls of the Academy of Fine Arts.
Passionate about the arts, though not gifted enough to create them himself, Stefano Bardini transformed his passion into a successful profession, becoming one of the leading figures in the Italian antiques market.
Throughout his life, Bardini assembled a vast and extraordinarily valuable collection inside his Florentine palace in Piazza de’ Mozzi, which was donated to the city upon his death in 1922.
Today, the Museo Bardini, the nearby Villa Bardini, and its gardens form a cultural hub of remarkable beauty and historical significance.

When we say that the beauty of Florence is breathtaking, we are not exaggerating!
In fact, there is a psychosomatic condition caused by exposure to an overwhelming amount of artistic and historical beauty, known as Stendhal Syndrome, also called the Florence Syndrome.
In 1817, the French writer Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, described the symptoms after visiting the Basilica of Santa Croce.
He reported experiencing heart palpitations, dizziness, mental confusion, and fear of fainting due to the “kind of ecstasy” triggered by the intensity of the art surrounding him.
In 1979, the Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini documented more than 100 cases of tourists experiencing vertigo, anxiety, and hallucinations while visiting Florence, officially naming the phenomenon Stendhal Syndrome.
But don’t worry! The symptoms are temporary, while the memory of such indescribable beauty lasts forever 😉
