Illuminated by the glow of Florence Lights Up, the Chiesa di San Paolino reveals centuries of hidden history beneath its Baroque elegance.
According to an ancient inscription, the church was founded as early as 335 AD and consecrated in 404, making it one of Florence’s oldest sacred sites. First documented in 1094, it later passed through many hands: Dominicans, diocesan clergy, Franciscans, and finally the Discalced Carmelites, who transformed it in the 17th century.
Almost nothing remains of the original Gothic structure — once a tall, narrow nave facing today’s Via San Paolino — as the church was entirely reshaped between 1669 and 1693 under Grand Duke Cosimo II, giving it the refined Baroque character we see today.
San Paolino was also part of Florence’s literary memory: Boccaccio mentioned it in the Decameron as a burial place for the poor, and Giovanni Villani recorded it in his chronicles. Even Poliziano served here as prior in the 15th century.
